Are You a Lighthouse?

Living on the east coast of Australia, I've seen many lighthouses. Lighthouses are a common feature along the coasts of every country, outcrop of land and island. They're there to guide ships through the darkness, offering a beacon of light in sometimes treacherous storms or fog, warning of the proximity of dangerous rocks or reefs.

While on holiday at Port Macquarie recently, Greg and I visited the Tacking Point Lighthouse. We often go up there to see if we can spot whales during whale migration season, as it is, understandably, a great vantage spot. We were hoping to catch the recent southern aurora from there, too - but unfortunately, there was nowhere to park; everyone else had the same idea. We had to settle for a less ideal spot on the beach. We were rewarded with some shaky, hand-held shots of beautiful colours, great for memories but not worthy of posting online.

Anyway, back to lighthouses! If you've ever been to Port Macquarie, you will be familiar with the breakwall along the southern side of the mouth of the Hastings River. It's a popular walk, lined with large rocks, most of which have been colourfully decorated with varying degrees of artistic ability. Many of the stones have been painted to commemorate a loved one who has passed on, or to celebrate a special event or family holiday. I always enjoy looking at these rocks, reading tributes and appreciating the artwork, but this time, I kept noticing one painted rock in particular. I'm sure I must have seen it many times before, since it was painted in 2017, but the message stood out:

I don't know who painted this rock, but it is beautiful, both the painting and the sentiment. It gently prompts passers-by to reflect: Are we there, to help others weather their storms?

It also reminded me that followers of Jesus are called to be a reflection of Christ's light to the world; to those around us. Jesus, in his sermon on the mount, recorded in Matthew chapter 5, makes this point very clearly:

14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father."

I'm thankful for the person who painted such a beautiful reminder that we can make a difference to others. We can be there to help others through the storms of life. We can share the hope that we have. May we always be willing to shine out Christ's love for all to see, just like a lighthouse, bringing safety and hope to those going through dark times.
